Description

The backbone of bold, everyday flavor. Katha’s Whole Black Pepper is sharp, aromatic, and freshly potent—an essential spice for chai, cooking, and finishing dishes with depth.

Sourced for quality and intensity, whole peppercorns deliver a brighter, more complex heat than pre-ground alternatives. Crack or grind fresh to unlock their full character—spicy, slightly citrusy, and deeply aromatic.

From chai blends to savory dishes, black pepper adds structure, balance, and a subtle kick that brings everything into focus.

What’s In It

Ingredients:
Whole black peppercorns from Kerala, India.

That’s it.
No additives. No anti-caking agents. No fillers.

Nutrition:
Naturally vegan and gluten-free

Freshness note: Whole peppercorns stay potent far longer than pre ground pepper. Grind only what you need.

Where It Comes From

Origin:
Kerala, India – Western Ghats region

Pepper vines grow climbing tall trees, shaded by the forest canopy. The altitude, humidity, and soil create peppercorns that are more aromatic and complex than mass produced varieties grown elsewhere.

This is the same region historically known as the “Pepper Coast.”

How We Process It

Peppercorns are harvested while still green.
They’re cleaned, then sun dried slowly until they darken and wrinkle naturally.
No artificial heat. No rushing the process.

Once dried, they’re sorted by size and density. Only full, oil-rich peppercorns make it into our bags.

Storage Tips

Unopened:
Shelf-stable for years if kept cool and dry

After opening:
Keep sealed tightly
Store away from heat and sunlight
Avoid keeping near the stove

Whole peppercorns last far longer than ground pepper without losing potency.

What actually goes into this

Making chai from our family farm means vetting every part of the supply chain. From who picked the cardamom, to how much they were paid, our curiosity doesn't stop at flavor.

I started Kathas because I wanted to be able to explore those questions openly—where every step of our path is built on real relationships. Through direct trade, transparent prices, and ongoing dialogue with our team.

That's where real insights come from. By building real relationships, asking better questions, and staying open to change.

FAQ

How is this different from grocery store black pepper?

Most grocery store pepper is pre-ground or made from low-grade peppercorns dried quickly with heat. That strips aroma and leaves only blunt heat. This is whole, sun-dried, high-oil pepper from its native region in Kerala, India.

Is Kerala black pepper very spicy?

It is more aromatic than aggressive. The heat builds gradually and does not taste bitter or dusty. You get citrusy top notes first, then warming heat that lingers.

Do I need a pepper mill for whole peppercorns?

Highly recommended. A pepper mill or mortar and pestle lets you control grind size and release the essential oils fresh. That is where all the aroma and complexity comes from.

How long does one bag of black pepper last?

A long time. Pepper goes further when it actually has flavor—you will find yourself using less once you switch to good pepper. Whole peppercorns stay potent far longer than pre-ground.

Can I use black pepper in desserts or drinks?

Yes. Black pepper pairs beautifully with chocolate, fruit like strawberries and mango, and even cocktails. The citrusy, warming notes complement sweet flavors surprisingly well.

Why is Kerala pepper special?

Black pepper is native to the Western Ghats of Kerala—this is the original climate for pepper. The humidity, shade from forest canopy, and mineral-rich soil create peppercorns with more essential oils, brighter heat, and complex flavor compared to mass-produced varieties grown elsewhere.
